Drake: Shooting Near Rapper’s Toronto Home Leaves Security Guard Wounded

Drake’s Toronto mansion was taped off by police last night following a shooting near the property.

According to a report from Page Six, the victim has now been identified as a security guard employed by Drake. The 48-year-old is believed to be in stable condition.

According to a tweet from Toronto police, shots were fired around 2:10 a.m. ET near the corner of Bayview and Lawrence Avenues.

The suspect is believed to have fled in a car immediately after the shots were fired.

Shooting Near Drake’s Home: Everything We Know So Far

The officers who responded to the call discovered a seriously wounded man who was taken to a nearby hospital.

Thankfully, no one else was harmed. Drake was not injured, and it’s unclear if he was at home at the time of the shooting.

The security guard’s injuries have been described by The New York Post as non-life-threatening.

Initially, it was hoped that the conflict that led to the shooting had nothing to do with Drake.

The cause of the dispute remains unclear, but it looks increasingly as though the rapper was being targeted.

Social media speculators are already jumping to the conclusion that the incident was related to the ongoing feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar.

The war of words between Drake and Kendrick is the most high-profile hip hop beef in recent memory.

Many have compared the situation to the deadly war between Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G. that played out in the mid-nineties.

Earlier this week, Kendrick released a scathing diss track titled “Not Like Us.” The song featured an aerial photo of Drake’s home on its cover.

The bad blood between the rappers has been simmering at least since last year. It boiled over in a big way in recent weeks, with both artists releasing multiple diss tracks directed at one another.

“Not Like Us,” the latest from Kendrick, begins with the line “I see dead people” and contains ominous references to the ways in which Drake’s recent remarks have sparked outrage.

It’s important to note that these are just lines in a song, and at present, there’s no reason to believe that last night’s shooting had anything to do with the feud between Kendrick and Drake.

According to the Post, Drake’s house is at the center of the investigation. But that does not mean that the rapper was being targeted.

That said, Drake and his loved ones are likely taking extra precautions today.

We’ll have further updates on this developing story as new information becomes available.

Kendrick Lamar Drops Yet Another Drake Diss Track, ‘Not Like Us’

Kendrick Lamar continued to ramp up his increasingly personal musical battle with Drake by releasing “Not Like Us,” his third song in 36 hours, early Saturday evening. The song is posted on Lamar’s official YouTube channel — which essentially guarantees its authenticity in an era when an AI deepfake must always be considered — and […]

Fantasy Romance & a Freebie

The Ex Talk

The Ex Talk by Rachel Lynn Solomon is $1.99! I’m unsure if this is a leftover Kindle Daily Deal from yesterday. Catherine read this one and gave it a B-:

There was some lovely writing, some fantastic banter, and I really did like Shay and Dominic together. They had terrific chemistry and the sort of teasing relationship that makes me very happy, because it means there is a firm foundation of friendship underneath the romance.

Public radio co-hosts navigate mixed signals in Rachel Lynn Solomon’s sparkling romantic comedy debut.

Shay Goldstein has been a producer at her Seattle public radio station for nearly a decade, and she can’t imagine working anywhere else. But lately it’s been a constant clash between her and her newest colleague, Dominic Yun, who’s fresh off a journalism master’s program and convinced he knows everything about public radio.

When the struggling station needs a new concept, Shay proposes a show that her boss green-lights with excitement. On The Ex Talk, two exes will deliver relationship advice live, on air. Their boss decides Shay and Dominic are the perfect co-hosts, given how much they already despise each other. Neither loves the idea of lying to listeners, but it’s this or unemployment. Their audience gets invested fast, and it’s not long before The Ex Talk becomes a must-listen in Seattle and climbs podcast charts.

As the show gets bigger, so does their deception, especially when Shay and Dominic start to fall for each other. In an industry that values truth, getting caught could mean the end of more than just their careers.

A Heart of Blood and Ashes

A Heart of Blood and Ashes by Milla Vane is $1.99! I’m also unsure if this is another leftover KDD.  Romancelandia went nuts for this fantasy romance, though I will warn the environment and world is pretty bleak at times. We also had a great guest review for this one by Crystal Anne with an E. What do you think of the series?

A generation past, the western realms were embroiled in endless war. Then the Destroyer came. From the blood and ashes he left behind, a tenuous alliance rose between the barbarian riders of Parsathe and the walled kingdoms of the south. That alliance is all that stands against the return of an ancient evil—until the barbarian king and queen are slain in an act of bloody betrayal.

Though forbidden by the alliance council to kill the corrupt king responsible for his parents’ murders, Maddek vows to avenge them, even if it costs him the Parsathean crown. But when he learns it was the king’s daughter who lured his parents to their deaths, the barbarian warrior is determined to make her pay.

Yet the woman Maddek captures is not what he expected. Though the last in a line of legendary warrior-queens, Yvenne is small and weak, and the sharpest weapons she wields are her mind and her tongue. Even more surprising is the marriage she proposes to unite them in their goals and to claim their thrones—because her desire for vengeance against her father burns even hotter than his own…

Wicked Designs

Wicked Designs by Lauren Smith is FREE! This book is the first in The League of Rogues series. If you already own this one, a couple more books in the series are also priced at 99c! Some readers mentioned being wary because of the kidnapping element of the plot, but many were won over by Smith’s writing.

The League of Rogues takes what they want—but have they taken on too much?

For too long Miss Emily Parr has been subject to the whims of her indebted uncle and the lecherous advances of his repulsive business partner. Her plan to be done with dominating men forever is simple—find herself a kind husband who will leave her to her books.

It seems an easy enough plan, until she is unexpectedly abducted by an incorrigible duke who hides a wounded spirit behind flashing green eyes.

Godric St. Laurent, Duke of Essex, spends countless nights at the club with his four best friends, and relishes the rakish reputation society has branded him with. He has no plans to marry anytime soon—if ever. But when he kidnaps an embezzler’s niece, the difficult debutante’s blend of sweetness and sharp tongue make him desperate for the one thing he swears he never wanted: love.

Yet as they surrender to passion, danger lurks in Godric’s shadowed past, waiting for him to drop his guard—and rob him of the woman he can’t live without.

Warning: This novel includes a lady who refuses to stay kidnapped, a devilish duke with a dark past, and an assortment of charming rogues who have no idea what they’ve gotten themselves into.

Some of Today’s Kindle Daily Deals

Half a Soul

Half a Soul by Olivia Atwater is $2.99! This is book one in the Regency Faerie Tales series and subsequent books in the series were listed in latest Hide Your Wallet. There’s another YA vs. Adult debate for this one as well. I believe there is no sexual content in this one.

“Whimsical, witty, and brimming over with charm” (India Holton), Olivia Atwater’s delightful debut will transport you to a magical version of Regency England, where the only thing more meddlesome than a fairy is a marriage-minded mother!

It’s difficult to find a husband in Regency England when you’re a young lady with only half a soul.

Ever since she was cursed by a faerie, Theodora Ettings has had no sense of fear or embarrassment—an unfortunate condition that leaves her prone to accidental scandal. Dora hopes to be a quiet, sensible wallflower during the London Season—but when Elias Wilder, the strange, handsome, and utterly ill-mannered Lord Sorcier, discovers her condition, she is instead drawn into peculiar and dangerous faerie affairs.

If her reputation can survive both her curse and her sudden connection with the least-liked man in all high society, then she and her family may yet reclaim their normal place in the world. But the longer Dora spends with Elias, the more she begins to suspect that one may indeed fall in love even with only half a soul.

Hang the Moon

RECOMMENDED: Hang the Moon by Alexandria Bellefleur is $1.99! Thanks to everyone know about this deal! Tara read this one and gave it an A-:

This book is important for women like me, showing that we can absolutely have our HEA with a man and still proudly claim our queerness. Plus, it’s such a joyful celebration of love that it’s like a warm hug. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will read it again.

In a delightful follow-up to Written in the Stars, Alexandria Bellefleur delivers another #ownvoices queer rom-com about a hopeless romantic who vows to show his childhood crush that romance isn’t dead by recreating iconic dates from his favorite films…

Brendon Lowell loves love. It’s why he created a dating app to help people find their one true pairing and why he’s convinced “the one” is out there, even if he hasn’t met her yet. Or… has he? When his sister’s best friend turns up in Seattle unexpectedly, Brendon jumps at the chance to hang out with her. He’s crushed on Annie since they were kids, and the stars have finally aligned, putting them in the same city at the same time.

Annie booked a spur-of-the-moment trip to Seattle to spend time with friends before moving across the globe. She’s not looking for love, especially with her best friend’s brother. Annie remembers Brendon as a sweet, dorky kid. Except, the 6-foot-4 man who shows up at her door is a certified Hot Nerd and Annie… wants him? Oh yes.

Getting involved would be a terrible idea—her stay is temporary and he wants forever—but when Brendon learns Annie has given up on dating, he’s determined to prove that romance is real. Taking cues from his favorite rom-coms, Brendon plans to woo her with elaborate dates straight out of Nora Ephron’s playbook. The clock is ticking on Annie’s time in Seattle, and Brendon’s starting to realize romance isn’t just flowers and chocolate. But maybe real love doesn’t need to be as perfect as the movies… as long as you think your partner hung the moon.

The Beast of Beswick

The Beast of Beswick by Amalie Howard is 99c! Catherine reviewed this one and gave it a B-:

I enjoyed the complexity of the characters, and I was especially intrigued by Isobel, whose inner life is so opaque to her sister, and yet clearly quite well-developed. There’s a lot of heat and sensuality in the book, and some lovely moments of humour. These are all really big positives.

The Duchess Deal by Tessa Dare meets Taming of the Shrew in the start to a new Regency series from award-winning author Amalie Howard.

Lord Nathaniel Harte, the disagreeable Duke of Beswick, spends his days smashing porcelain, antagonizing his servants, and snarling at anyone who gets too close. With a ruined face like his, it’s hard to like much about the world. Especially smart-mouthed harpies―with lips better suited to kissing than speaking―who brave his castle with indecent proposals.

But Lady Astrid Everleigh will stop at nothing to see her younger sister safe from a notorious scoundrel, even if it means offering herself up on a silver platter to the forbidding Beast of Beswick himself. And by offer, she means what no highborn lady of sound and sensible mind would ever dream of―a tender of marriage with her as his bride.

Cinderella and the Duke

Cinderella and the Duke by Lydia Drake is 99c! This is book one in the Renegade Duke historical romance series. As you could guess by the title, this one is a retelling of Cinderella.

Miss Julia Beaumont has exactly one night to find herself a husband…

The Weatherford Ball is the last chance Julia Beaumont has to escape the clutches of her horrid stepmother. Any potential husband will do—rich, poor, even a reasonably well-groomed walrus. But all of Julia’s matrimonial chances are completely obliterated…thanks to the actions of an infuriating and utterly rakish duke.

Gregory Carter, Duke of Ashworth, would never risk his cherished bachelorhood by flirting with marriage-starved debutantes. But one look at the luscious and refreshingly clever Julia, and he simply can’t resist a stolen kiss—scandal be damned. Then just as things start getting deliciously interesting, the lady flees…leaving only a slipper behind.

And it must have been one dandy of a kiss. Because now Julia has proposed to him. After all, the lady needs a husband, and this roguish duke will certainly do. It’s simply a matter of making him the perfect scandalous offer…

filtering out incorrect collisions in pydrake

In our robotics project, we use pydrake query object to check wether we have collisions in our iiwa arm (this is necessary for our RRT and useful for double-checking that the output of our inverse kinematics module is good).

However, with standard settings, we detect some non-existant collisions that limit our robot's motion. In particular, when using the following sdf for an iiwa arm (the scenario contains only this iiwa arm and nothing else):

- add_model:
    name: iiwa
    file: package://drake/manipulation/models/iiwa_description/iiwa7/iiwa7_with_box_collision.sdf

And setting its angles with

example_joint_angles = np.array([0., 0., 0., 0., 0., 1.95, 0.])
environment.model.robot_arm.set_joint_angles(example_joint_angles)
print(environment.model.has_collisions())

we are told that there is a collision, but setting the 6th angle to be 1.9 says no collisions (for reference, the implementation of our methods are included below).

I think that these angles should not result in a collision for two reasons. First, just looking at the meshcat, I see that the arm is still far from folding on itself. Second, we did not expect this kind of collision in first place, because we set the angle limits on our inverse kinematics according to the joint limits listed in the sdf of the iiwa arm (which allow for an angle of up to 2.0944 on this joint).

So I guess the first question is: is there a better way of checking for collisions with an iiwa arm (e.g., using a different sdf that has slightly more refined collisions)?

If not, is there some way of telling the query object / scene_graph / etc. to skip collisions between these two objects?

class IIWAArm:
    #...
    def set_joint_angles(self, q: np.ndarray, visualize: bool = True):
    '''
    Instantaneously moves the arm to the given angles (for visualization / motion planning).

    Args:
        q (np.ndarray): Angles to move to.
    '''
    self.iiwa = self.plant.GetModelInstanceByName("iiwa")
    self.plant.SetPositions(self.plant_context, self.iiwa, q)
    if visualize:
        self.diagram.ForcedPublish(self.context)

class SimulationModel:
    robot_arm: IIWAArm
    #...
    def has_collisions(self) -> bool:
        scene_graph = self.station.GetSubsystemByName("scene_graph")
        context = self.context
        scene_graph_context = scene_graph.GetMyMutableContextFromRoot(context)
        query_object = scene_graph.GetOutputPort("query").Eval(scene_graph_context)
        return query_object.HasCollisions()

    def get_collisions(self) -> List[PenetrationAsPointPair]:
        scene_graph = self.station.GetSubsystemByName("scene_graph")
        context = self.context
        scene_graph_context = scene_graph.GetMyMutableContextFromRoot(context)
        query_object = scene_graph.GetOutputPort("query").Eval(scene_graph_context)
        res = query_object.ComputePointPairPenetration()
        return res

I also tried using the function get_collisions listed above, which lets me extract the GeometryId's of the objects in a collision. So, in theory, I think that I should be able to use get_collisions and then skip the collisions that don't make sense (e.g. between joints 6 and 7 of the iiwa). I got stuck with that strategy, because I couldn't find a function that lets me extract "human readable" information about what object a given GeometryId corresponds to (e.g., there is a scene_graph.RenameGeometry that allows me to set the name corresponding to a GeometryId, but I couldn't find a similar "getter function").

My current (extremely hacky) approach is to change the const'r of SimulationModel to purposefully cause this false collision on purpose to find its corresponding GeometryId's and make has_collisions skip them. I.e., something like:

class SimulationModel:
    def __init__(self, ...):
        # ...
        self.robot_arm.set_joint_angles(BAD_ANGLES)
        self.fake_collisions = self.get_collisions()
        self.robot_arm.set_joint_angles(DEFAULT_ANGLES)

    def new_has_collisions(self) -> bool:
        suspected_collisions = self.get_collisions()
        filtered_collisions = filter_out(suspected_collisions, self.fake_collisions)
        return len(filtered_collisions) != 0

Chantel Everett Basically Confirms that Drake Slid Into Her DMs

90 Day Fiance superfans are real. And we’re not just talking about Ms. Kimberly.

Rihanna has DMed multiple cast members — from the worst to the best. Lady Gaga is a huge fan of the series, too.

Most don’t view the cast as a potential dating pool. For so, so many good reasons.

We’ve all heard that Drake may be an exception. And Chantel Everett has basically confirmed that he was trying to smash.

A screenshot of Chantel Everett holding up one finger while speaking on a video call on her phone.

In a recent episode of The Family Chantel‘s final season, the titular Chantel Everett discussed her divorce era.

And she touched upon the attention that’s come with it.

During the episode, Chantel admitted to the cameras that “a lot of great guys” had been messaging her.

In fact, Chantel also let it slip that one of the individuals in question was none other than a “Canadian rapper.”

Now, Canada is home to tens of millions of people. Obviously, there are multiple rappers.

But there’s only one who very famously slid into her DMs, according to reports from earlier this year. That would be Drake.

In the same episode, bitter ex-husband (even though he’s the one who wanted out of the marriage, he seems the angier of the two) mocked the rumors about Drake.

“I heard the rumor that Drake slipped into Chantel’s DM,” he taunted.

Pedro jeered: “Go with Drake, the famous rapper, you know? Go with him.”

Previously, Chantel had teased the idea — without naming names, or countries of origin — in interviews ahead of this season.

“I’ve had people sliding into my DMs, I’ve been talking to a couple of athletes, some actors, some rappers as well,” she said coyly at the time.

Chantel added: “Also, a lot of health care, doctors, like all kinds of people … So I’m enjoying this attention from men.”

Rumors surrounding Chantel and Drake actually began back in the summer of 2022.

At the time, their marriage’s ending was obviously a much newer matter.

Yet reports claimed that Drake, one of the most famous rappers on the planet, had been sliding into Chantel’s DMs almost from the moment that he heard about the breakup.

Just to be clear, it’s not like Chantel opened her DMs one day to see a very famous dong pic.

She reportedly saw that he had reached out to her just to see how she was doing.

By all accounts, they never actually med up … but, allegedly, they did make tentative plans to. Things just never materialized for them.

Truth be told, it sounds like Drake may have done her a huge favor.

Pedro has seemingly been foaming at the mouth with unhappiness since these reports came out.

His repeated digs at Drake, who has never said a word to him, frankly seem pathetic. (And I say that as someone who is not a fan of Drake)

Chantel Everett speaks to the camera. The shape of her hair is peculiar.
Some viewers of The Family Chantel wish that the titular Chantel Everett had made different styling choices for some of her confessional scenes in Season 5. (Image Credit: TLC)

That said … some wonder if these rumors about Drake are manufactured.

It’s true that multiple outlets reported on them. And it does seem unlikely that Chantel would say “Canadian rapper” without there being some truth to it.

But it seems awfully convenient for any recent divorcee to have a famous guy blowing up their phone in a way that makes it look like they’re “winning” the divorce.

Chantel Everett wears a cotton candy pink wig.
Pretty in pink! Chantel Everett looks exactly that. (Image Credit: TLC)

That said … Chantel does seem to be happier than Pedro. Albeit only a little bit.

As miserable and toxic as their marriage was, divorce is a miserable process.

We’re glad that their marital nightmare is over. Even though it was fun to watch, it just wasn’t good for anyone. Except, you know, for TLC.
