Top 5 Ways to Clean Your Closet this Spring
When it comes to cleaning out your closet, you don’t necessarily have to wait until it’s Spring to start doing it. I started in December, so I could have a fresh start with my wardrobe for the new year.
It’s relaxing, calming, and a great way to get rid of the clutter and mess that you may have kept in your closet, not just your clothes. Depending on how big your closet is, cleaning everything out may take a few days, not just hours, so below are a few tips to help you start getting organized now.
1. Invite A Friend: If you are ready to clean out your closet now, one way to bring you motivation is by asking a friend to come over and help you! Inviting your girlfriends over to help make room for either new clothes, and in return, they may ask you to do the same for them.
The best part about having someone assist you in this big task is it will help the time fly by, and you won’t become frustrated doing so. Have some great songs on and an incentive to get it done either by a particular time or enjoy an adult beverage as a reward for a job well done together.
2. Does It Make You Happy: I’m sure by now you may have heard about the Marie Kondo method of going through your items, asking yourself if it brings you joy and either keeping it or donating/throwing it away. By sparking joy, this helps you determine what you want to keep wearing that makes you feel your best. If you are on the fence about it, chances are it’s still going to hang in your closet for months on end without you ever putting it back on.
On the other hand, also check to make sure you don’t have any multiple of items such as how many black jeans do you own or the same colored sweater? Do you need so many options for that one type? That can also help you eliminate it.
3. Try It On: Similar to it making you happy, you want to make sure that the item still fits you. Try it on and see what you think. Can you mix and match it with other items in your closet? If it doesn’t fit, donate it, try to sell it in a garage sale, or give it to a friend who may want it.
Don’t hold onto any item of clothing that you think might fit in a few months. There are many chances that it will be out of style or you don’t like it anymore, so it’s better to give it to a shelter who will find a happier owner.
4. So Fresh And So Clean: It's important to properly wash, fold and store the clothes that you love and plan to wear over the next few months. If you're a busy mom or a college student, you can consider taking your clothes to a full-service laundry mat. You can check if there is one in your area that offers pick-up and drop-off services. This means you can just hand over your belongings to them, and they will take care of the rest. Once your clothes are washed and folded, they will be neatly packaged and ready for you to take home and put away.
5. Turn Your Hangers Around: Now that everything is clean, pressed, and ready to wear, one way to help you realize what clothes are your favorites is turning your hangers around. If you wear an item, turn the hanger around and then assess at the end of the month or 6 months what items you haven’t worn. This helps you see what items are your personal favorites and others that may need to be given away.
