The new Snapdragon X Plus has been announced. It’s another new chip from Qualcomm aimed at taking on the Apple M-series and rejuvenating Windows laptops. Here’s how it compares with the Apple M3.

Qualcomm’s venture into laptop chips has been a long time coming but it will all begin over the next few months. Now, though, we know it isn’t all about the Snapdragon X Elite. The company has revealed a new chip that sits just below its flagship, the X Plus. The new chips may see Windows laptops finally catch up to Macs when it comes to their potent combination of performance and efficiency but the jury’s still out. Let’s see what the key differences are.

Qualcomm should win for multi-threaded CPU and NPU performance

We’ve tested the new Apple M3 in our full MacBook Air M3 review and we’re mightily impressed. By comparison, with laptops sporting the new Qualcomm chips yet to be released, we have to reserve judgement on their capabilities. But, on paper, Qualcomm is touting boosted capabilities with the X Plus compared with the M3.

The Snapdragon X Plus is said to offer 10% faster multi-threaded CPU performance compared with the Apple M3. So, in theory, X Plus laptops should provide the performance and efficiency of multitasking and other multi-threaded workloads compared with M3 devices. It’s worth noting the X Plus can be equipped with more memory than the M3, up to 64GB versus 24GB for a Mac.

Further, the X Plus is set to offer a whopping 45 TOPS of AI-focused NPU power. The Apple M3 only comes in at 18 TOPS. However, it all comes down to how it’s used.

Apple M3 offers higher CPU speed and a 3nm process

Qualcomm may claim it has the edge on multi-threaded performance but the Apple M3 wins on some key fundamentals. The Snapdragon X Plus offers up to 3.4GHz processing speeds across its 10 CPU cores, while the Apple M3 can reach up to 4.05GHz. The M3 is also built upon a smaller 3nm process than the 4nm X Plus, which typically means boosted efficiency.

Snapdragon X Plus should offer more choice

Given Qualcomm isn’t in the business of making its own laptops, the Snapdragon X Plus is set to debut across different Windows manufacturers. We’re expected to see the new Snapdragon laptop chips across Microsoft Surface models while other popular manufacturers like Asus, Acer, Lenovo and HP may well be involved but that’s unconfirmed. Comparatively, you can only get the M3 on devices made by Apple.

Battery life remains an unknown

Admittedly, it isn’t an easy task for Qualcomm to tout the battery life capabilities of the Snapdragon X Plus as manufacturers will be able to pair it with differing battery sizes and chassis with varying efficiency capabilities. However, with a huge benefit of moving to Arm being the additional battery life that a more efficient chip can bring, it remains a key point of curiosity.

Qualcomm has said that the chip “can go longer on a single charge with up to multi-day battery life” but that will need to be tested when we get our hands on one of these devices.

We know the MacBook Air M3 can offer up to 18 hours of battery life from our review testing, while Qualcomm has been rather coy relating to its new chips. The only indicative comparison we have is through Qualcomm comparing the X Elite with an Intel Core 7 155H chip. Qualcomm says it offers 43% longer battery life for local video playback, 58% longer for web browsing and 40% longer for Office 365 apps.

In our testing of the Asus Zenbook 14 OLED that includes the aforementioned Intel chip, we found that it managed up to 13 hours of battery life. So, there’s potential that Snapdragon X Elite laptops could line up fairly nicely with the Apple M3 in terms of battery life, but we don’t yet know if the X Plus differentiates in that regard from its flagship stablemate. And, given we’ve yet to test any new Snapdragon devices and they’ll differ greatly between different machines, take all this with a pinch of salt.

Qualcomm has just revealed another PC chip as part of its upcoming Arm-focused push. The new Snapdragon X Plus sits underneath the already-announced Snapdragon X Elite. Here are the full details.

An exciting new frontier in Windows computing is set to land over the next few months, with Qualcomm bringing Arm chips to the platform in a big way. Apple has seen huge success from its transition to the technology, so could this be Windows’ version of the Apple M1 moment?

We know Snapdragon’s new chips are likely coming to the Microsoft Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 with other manufacturers to follow at some point. But, now, we know it isn’t all about the X Elite. But, just what is the newly announced Snapdragon X Plus?

What is Snapdragon X Plus?

The Snapdragon X Plus is a new 4nm Arm-based platform from Qualcomm for laptops. The chip sits below the Snapdragon X Elite but still aims to provide “exceptional performance, long battery life, and industry-leading on-device AI capabilities”.

Qualcomm is touting that the X Plus’ multi-threaded CPU performance is 10% faster than the Apple M3, with the flagship X Elite being 28% faster. Compared with the Intel Core Ultra 7 155H, Qualcomm states it can offer 37% faster multi-thread performance while using 57% of the power. For the GPU, the X Plus is showcased as topping the Intel by 36% at 50% of the power. On the AI front, Qualcomm reports a 100x increase in its NPU over the “PC laptop competition”.

The X Plus features a 64-bit architecture, 10 cores (up to 3.4GHz), 42MB of total cache, a GPU with up to 3.8 TFLOPs and an NPU of up to 45 TOPS. For RAM, the technology used is LPDDR5x and up to 64GB is supported while SD, NVMe SSD over PCIe Gen 4 and UFS 4.0 storage is supported.

The newly announced chip also supports dual cameras of up to 36-megapixels, a single camera of up to 64-megapixels and up to 4K HDR video capture. In terms of visuals, it can drive up to UHD at 120Hz with HDR 10 on-device as well as external display support for three monitors at up to UHD and 60Hz or two displays at 5K and 60Hz.

You’ll find a Snapdragon X65 5G modem onboard, with peak download speeds of 10Gbps and peak upload speeds of 3.5Gbps. The rest of the wireless connectivity rounds out at support for up to Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4. For ports, there’s support for up to USB4.

The 10-core CPU is built upon Qualcomm’s new Oryon platform, developed with the team the company acquired from the purchase of Nuvia, so it has been a long time coming. It aims to offer strong performance and efficiency, in similar fashion to Apple’s M-series.

Expectedly, AI is a strong focus, with Qualcomm stating this chip powers “the next generation of AI PCs”. The X Plus features the same 45 TOPS NPU as the flagship X Elite, which Qualcomm says is the “world’s fastest NPU for laptops”.

Snapdragon X Plus vs Snapdragon X Elite: What's the difference?

Qualcomm is gearing up to take on Apple, AMD and Intel in the laptop space this year, with the launch of the new Snapdragon X Elite and Snapdragon X Plus chips. 

Both of these new laptop chips are based on Arm architecture, as the company hopes to replicate the success of Apple Silicon

But what are the differences between the Snapdragon X Plus and Snapdragon X Elite? We’ve created this comparison guide to highlight the key specs.

Snapdragon X Elite has more processing power

We haven’t had a chance to test either of these laptop processors just yet, but by judging the specs sheet, it looks like the Snapdragon X Elite will offer more processing power. 

The Snapdragon X Elite features 12 cores up to a frequency speed of 3.8Ghz, whereas the Snapdragon X Plus packs in 10 cores up to 3.4GHz. 

This means that the Elite not only has two extra cores to aid with multi-tasking, but can also reach a higher clock speed, which will have a big impact on overall performance. 

Qualcomm has also announced that both chips will support up to 64GB RAM, although this will be dependent on the configuration options for each laptop. 

Snapdragon X Elite has a stronger GPU performance 

The two Snapdragon processors feature an Adreno GPU, which will be important for graphics-intensive workloads such as gaming and content creation. 

However, the specs of the Adreno GPU do differ between the two Snapdragon processors. For the Snapdragon X Plus, the GPU performance is capable of up to 3.8 TFLOPs. As for the Snapdragon X Elite, it has three different flavours depending on which laptop you go for, with two limited to 3.8 TFLOPs, and the third capable of up to 4.6 TFLOPs. 

This means the Snapdragon X Elite has a higher performance ceiling when it comes to graphics performance. It’s important to note that these are just integrated graphics though, and so are unlikely to be able to compete with discrete options from Nvidia and AMD. Expect it to be more of a rival to the Apple M3 chip rather than components designed for gaming machines.

Snapdragon X Plus shares the same AI performance 

Laptop makers are investing a lot into AI this year, so it’s no surprise to see that Qualcomm is making sure its new Snapdragon chips are also up to snuff in this area. Both chips feature a Qualcomm Hexagon NPU to maximise AI performance. 

Surprisingly, the Snapdragon X Plus seemingly matches the Snapdragon X Elite for AI performance, with both offering up to 45 TOPS (Trillions Operations per Second). Qualcomm claims this is the world’s fastest NPU for laptops.

What does this all mean though? A high AI performance will speed up processes that utilise artificial intelligence. Qualcomm confirms that its chips will support Windows Studio Effects, which can help to blur your background and block out unwanted sounds during a video call. Plenty of more AI-powered apps are expected to arrive in the near future too, putting Qualcomm in a very strong position. 

Both processors support Wi-Fi 7

Wi-Fi 7 is the latest wireless technology, offering peak rates up to 40 Gbps when using the 6GHz band. It also supports new features such as Multi-Link Operation, which allows users to use multiple bands to connect to a single device in order to maximise performance and efficiency. 

Wi-Fi 7 devices are still thin on the ground, but Qualcomm has confirmed that its new chips will support the new wireless technology. Of course, you will need a Wi-Fi 7 router in order to reap these benefits, which still costs a lot of money. 

Fortunately, there will be backwards compatibility for Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 6 too, so your laptop will still be able to make use of older wireless setups before you eventually make the upgrade.
