“As a formerly chronically stressed young woman, I just remember thinking one day, ‘You are taking this for granted. You are taking your life for granted,’” Hathaway, 41, said in Us Weekly’s exclusive preview from TheNew York Times Magazine’s debut episode of “The Interview” podcast, which drops in its entirety on Saturday, April 27.
Hathaway recalled telling herself, “You have no idea. Something could fall through the sky, and that would be lights out.”
As a seasoned actress in her 40s, Hathaway has tried to move past those fears. “So when I find the old instincts rising, I just tell myself, ‘You are not going to die stressed,’” she explained.
The Oscar winner noted that as a young woman she “didn’t know how to breathe yet,” remembering that was “really complicated” for her.

When asked what specifically she was so stressed about in the past, Hathaway responded, “The simple answer is literally everything. I was very in my head about a lot of things.”

Reporter David Marchese asked if “anything” was “cooking” with the next installment of the Disney movie franchise, to which Hathaway replied, “Yep.”
She teased, “I don’t think it would be nice” to tell fans any more details.
Does She Have a Favorite Past Project?
“I like to look toward the horizon rather than back at what I’ve done,” the actress said when asked about her movie history. “I don’t watch my films. I love that so many of my movies are the films that you cuddle up with; I’m aware of that aspect of it, but the concept of having a name is weird. The idea of having a name that signifies something that could qualify as an Easter egg, it’s not a concept that I think about a lot.”

In the 2024 movie, Hathaway’s character, Solène, is described as “a people pleaser from New Jersey,” which she said she “might have” suggested.
“I think I’m a former people pleaser from New Jersey. So much of the reason I was drawn to acting is that it was an outlet for expression that I could not find on my own,” Hathaway said of the movie nod. “And in the space between feeling so connected when I was acting and so lost when I wasn’t, you try to make your way, and one of the ways that you make your way is, ‘Oh, if I do this, that will make someone else happy, and maybe that’s what I’m supposed to be doing.’”
She added: “It takes a long time to go, ‘That doesn’t really matter if you don’t know who you are.’ Unless you just want an identity that’s all about pleasing people, which I suppose is perfectly valid. But I’m not that nice.”
Hathaway was excited to play a 40-something in The Idea of You but doesn’t think of hitting that age in reality as an accomplishment.
“I don’t take it that seriously. There are so many other things I identify as milestones,” she shared. “I don’t normally talk about it, but I am over five years sober. That feels like a milestone to me. Forty feels like a gift.”
Does She Dwell on Her Past Stress?
“My goal is to heal it and not relive it. I’m not trying to be evasive. I don’t spend a great deal of time thinking about it because I feel that I found a window and I climbed through it. I work hard to just be present,” the Devil Wears Prada actress explained. “Like I said, I’m more grateful. I’m more settled in myself. I’m less afraid of things not happening. You know, the time in which I was an emerging adult was a different time. We weren’t having the types of conversations that we were having now.”
Adam Sandler Kept Her Spirits High While Working on ‘The Idea of You’
“When I was making The Idea of You, I was so spoiled, staying in a beautiful house in Atlanta, Georgia, that was much larger than my needs,” she recalled. “I would get home from work, and I’d be in this house by myself, and that was giving me the heebie-jeebies.”
Hathaway realized that she was uncomfortable because “there was no laughter in the house.” To combat the quietness, she began listening to stand-up specials, including Sandler’s “100% Fresh.”
“As extraordinary, beloved and iconic as Adam Sandler is, I think he’s underappreciated,” the actress revealed. “I can quote you every line from Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore and The Wedding Singer.”
Hathaway noted that she feels “much more comfortable talking about Adam Sandler, whom I’ve never met, than I do talking about what makes me tick.” She concluded, “I just need to figure out how to practice.”

Bush came out in a self-written cover story for Glamour published on Thursday, April 25, which marked the first time she commented on her romance with Harris. She also denied that she cheated on her ex-husband, Grant Hughes.
“As I came into myself, I already felt it was my home. I think I’ve always known that my sexuality exists on a spectrum,” Bush wrote. “Right now I think the word that best defines it is queer. I can’t say it without smiling, actually. And that feels pretty great.”
She continued, “I finally feel like I can breathe. I don’t think I can explain how profound that is. I feel like I was wearing a weighted vest for who knows how long. I hadn’t realized how heavy it was until I finally just put it down.”
Bush was married to Hughes, 42, for a little more than one year before the John Tucker Must Die actress filed for divorce in August 2023. By October of that year, she was romantically linked to Harris after they bonded amid their respective splits.
Harris was previously married to U.S. soccer star Ali Krieger, whom she wed in 2019. The exes are parents to two children: daughter Sloane, 3, and son Ocean, 20 months.
In her essay, Bush also addressed the “blatant lies” and “accusations of being a homewrecker” amid her and Harris’ divorces, maintaining that the allegations made against her were untrue.
“The ones who said I’d left my ex because I suddenly realized I wanted to be with women — my partners have known what I’m into for as long as I have,” she wrote. “The idea that I left my marriage based on some hysterical rendezvous — that, to be crystal-clear, never happened — rather than having taken over a year to do the most soul crushing work of my life? Rather than realizing I had to be the most vulnerable I’ve ever been, on a public stage, despite being terrified to my core? It feels brutal.”
Though Bush said her coming out journey was “long and thoughtful and exhaustive” and one that she didn’t want to share on social media in real time, she said her parents are fully supportive of her and who she loves.
“After the news became public, my mom told me that one of her friends called her and said, ‘Well, this can’t be true. I mean, your daughter isn’t gay,’” Bush wrote. “My mom felt that it was obvious, from the way her friend emphasized the word, that she meant it judgmentally. And you know what my mom said? ‘Oh honey, I think she’s pretty gay. And she’s happy.’”
In a review of the movie for Vogue, which was published on Friday, April 26, Williams, 42, opened up about seeing the real world of competitive tennis reflected in the story of Zendaya’s character, Tashi, and the two men in her life, Art (Mike Faist) and Patrick (Josh O’Connor).
“I recognized Art, too. A lot of male tennis players really rely on their wives and girlfriends,” Williams wrote of Art and Tashi’s duel marital and coach-player dynamic in the film. “Just look at someone like Roger Federer: he used to actually hit with his wife, Mirka, and they were like glue.”
Williams noted that players getting isolated is seen “so much” in men’s tennis, especially for those at the top of their game. She added, however, that even she was “codependent” with sister Venus Williams at the start of their careers.
“If you’re on the top, no one speaks to you,” she said. “You’re alone so much that you end up being really dependent on your team and their opinions. … So it’s interesting that the movie was able to capture some of that experience.”
While Serena seemingly had empathy for O’Connor’s character — “I’ve seen guys like that before. … There are players who really struggle and sometimes end up living in their car,” she wrote — she was most grated by Tashi, whom she described as “mean, for lack of a better word.”
There were elements to the character, however, that Serena could understand. “It’s true that when you’re really competitive, you have to make tough decisions, including in your dating life,” she explained. “You have to find someone who really understands your mind.”
Figuring out priorities when it comes to personal life and career is something Serena is well acquainted with. After a storied career that included 23 Grand Slam titles and four Olympic gold medals, she officially retired from tennis in 2022 to spend more time with her husband, Alexis Ohanian, and their daughter, Olympia, now 6. (The pair have since welcomed their second daughter, Adira, who arrived in August 2023.)
“I’m here to tell you that I’m evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me,” Serena wrote in a Vogue essay explaining her decision. “But I’ve been reluctant to admit to myself or anyone else that I have to move on from playing tennis. Alexis, my husband, and I have hardly talked about it; it’s like a taboo topic. I can’t even have this conversation with my mom and dad. It’s like it’s not real until you say it out loud.”

She continued, “Believe me, I never wanted to have to choose between tennis and a family,” Williams continued. “I don’t think it’s fair. If I were a guy, I wouldn’t be writing this because I’d be out there playing and winning while my wife was doing the physical labor of expanding our family. Maybe I’d be more of a Tom Brady if I had that opportunity.”
Since stepping off the court, Williams has focused on other endeavors. In April, she broke into the world of cosmetics with Wyn Beauty — a makeup brand that promises to offer products that will allow athletes to serve face amid the most taxing conditions. She also launched her wellness brand, Will Perform, which sells recovery products like magnesium lotion, pain relief gel and more.
Federer, meanwhile, announced his own retirement from tennis just weeks after Serena. The 20-time Grand Slam winner decided to hang up his racquet after a series of injuries. He underwent two knee surgeries in 2020 and returned to tennis the following year, but withdrew from the Australian Open and French Open while he recovered. He underwent another knee surgery in August 2021 and subsequently withdrew from the U.S. Open.
“As many of you know, the past three years have presented me with challenges in the form of injuries and surgeries,” the athlete wrote in an emotional letter shared via Instagram in September 2022. “I’ve worked hard to return to full competitive form. But I also know my body’s capacities and limits, and its message to me lately has been clear.”
He continued, “I am 41 years old. I have played more than 1,500 matches over 24 years. Tennis has treated me more generously than I ever would have dreamt, and now I must recognize when it is time to end my competitive career.”
In his announcement, Federer thanked Mirka, 46, and the couple’s four children for their support over the years. (The pair the knot in 2009 and are parents to two sets of twins: Myla and Charlene, 14, and Leo and Lenny, 9.)
“Seeing my family cheering me on from the stands is a feeling I will cherish forever,” he wrote.
